Becoming a mom is one of the most exciting, and most stressful things you’ll ever do. You think you’re prepared for everything, but there is so much that is guaranteed catch you by surprise. Yeah, you’ve been told about the sleepless nights and terrible twos, but has anyone ever told you this?
1.Your Pet Is No Longer Your ‘Baby’
When you brought your baby home, you swore that you wouldn’t ignore your pet. You loved your cat or dog when you brought them home, but with your new-born settling in at home, it’s just different. Fido is now lower in the pecking order. It’s easy to feel guilty about it, but please don’t. Once your baby has grown up a little, they’re going to be the best of pals.
You also swore that your home wouldn’t be taken over by toys, as you’ve seen in other parents’ homes. Surely you can keep on top of the mess, and keep all of the toys where they belong, out of sight, right? One of the real truths of motherhood is that you just can’t! That’s a lot of extra stuff, and sometimes it just spills out onto the living room floor. Don’t beat yourself up about it. Keep it as tidy as you can, but if you’re tired remember there’s only so much you can do. Plus, it’s not forever.
3.You’ll Regret Judging Other New Parents
Before you had kids, you’d roll your eyes whenever you heard a baby screaming in public. Whether you were in a restaurant, on a plane, or just out on the street, you’d get irritated really quick. Now though… You know exactly what they’re going through. You’ll give them understanding looks, or even try to help when you can. When parents stick together, you make it easier on all of you.
4.You’ll Have an Opinion On Diaper Fittings
All diapers are the same, right? Wrong! There’s so many brands available, and they all fit a little differently. You’ll need to experiment with them until you find the one that works best for them. You’re going to experience a few blow outs until you find the right one. YUCK! But don’t stress about it, and keep those wipes on hand.
5.Your Body Won’t Be The Same
If you read magazines, you’ll see so many celebrities that have incredible post baby bodies, and you’ll wonder why you can’t look like that. One of the best kept new mom secrets is that you most likely can’t. We don’t say that to be cruel, but those pictures show celebrities that have all kinds of specialists on hand to make them look like that. That’s nothing to say of the photo retouching as well. You can and should exercise and eat healthy, but you won’t have the same abs you had before your baby.
6.Your Friendship Group Will Change
This is something that every new mom fears. Once they have their baby, will they lose their friends? It’s true that your friendship group will evolve once you start having kids, but then all kinds of things will affect the group. New partners, marriage, divorce, big moves and more. Don’t be afraid though. You’ll start connecting with other people with common interests as your child grows. You may even find your new best friend at the next play group, who knows?
These are some new motherhood secrets that no one will tell you. No matter what happens though, you know that you’ll love your kid to the moon and back. It makes all the lifestyle changes and middle of the night feeds worth it, we promise.
