This Season Is Unique, But You Can Make The Most Of It
This year going out, hanging at the beach and doing all the usual, fun activities you look forward to every year — Disney World with the family, anyone? — are off the agenda because so many places are closed, in keeping with state guidelines on protecting people from the coronavirus.
Many locales have shuttered city bars and restaurants, and unless we “flatten the curve,” as the experts call it, we’re likely to be in some form of lockdown for several months yet.
Depending on where you live, you might find that your only reason to wear makeup is your weekly excursion to the grocery store. So… what does that mean for your daily makeup application routine? What are the trends this summer, and how can you enjoy trying them if you’re not going out every day?
In plenty of ways, that’s how! Just because you aren’t off to dinner at a fancy restaurant or going to a club with your friends every Friday night doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear a little makeup each day. In fact, sticking to your regular routine of “putting on your face” each morning goes a long way toward keeping the “isolation blues” at bay, and will mean you’re ready for an impromptu meeting with friends, family or coworkers on Zoom. The virus may have temporarily altered your socializing habits, but that’s no reason to let it deter you from taking care of your skin and indulging in the season’s hottest trends. Check out our tips below for making the most of your cosmetics this summer, and don’t let staying inside be a reason to become lazy about your looks. Remember — when life gives you lemons, make lemonade — or a Gibson! That’s like a martini, but with a zesty twist of lemon instead of olives.
1) Accentuate your eyes.
Since most people are wearing masks to protect themselves and others, lipstick doesn’t show and highlight the way it usually does. Instead, put on a little eye liner and a whole lot of mascara, and let your eyes do the smiling for you.
2) Highlight your cheeks with bronzer.
Since going to the beach to get a suntan might be a no-no in your region, invest in a sun block that’s tinted with a little color. Swipe it across your cheekbones and forehead, and across the bridge of your nose, just above where your mask sits. It will give you the sun-kissed glow you love, even though beaches in your area may be closed all season.
3) Coordinate your mask to your makeup.
If you’re handy with a needle and thread, go online and get instructions on how to sew your own masks, and make them fun, bright and pretty — the perfect compliment to your eye makeup. Make several if you can, and switch them up not only so you can wash them after each use, but so you can change them, depending on your outfit.
This summer is unlike any summer of past years, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make your cosmetics and masks part of a fun summer routine.
We’re all in this together, and the only way to get through it and keep it bearable is by accepting masks as a temporary part of your daily life. The longer you wear them, and the more fun you have doing it, the sooner we’ll all beat the virus and get back to our “normal” lives. And then we can really have some fun wearing makeup — eye shadow, mascara, and of course, bright, color-saturated lipstick! Everyone will be back to applying makeup just the way we used to soon, if we all cooperate and follow the guidelines this summer. For now, let your eyes do the talking for you!
